Ed Vaizey

During Culture, Media and Sport Questions yesterday Chris Evans (Lab / Co-op, Islwyn) asked a question about likely library provision following the outcomes of the Comprehensive Spending Review.

Responding for the Government, the Libraries Minister Ed Vaizey stated:

“Local authorities have a statutory duty to provide a comprehensive and efficient library service. I shall be writing to all local authorities this week to remind them of that. We have put in place a plan through the future libraries programme to help local authorities take forward their library service.”

Just in case Doncaster Council miss the memo, Save Doncaster Libraries would like to remind them of their statutory duty.

Thanks to Unison for bringing this information to our attention.

Update: The Guardian have also picked up on the issue that massive library cuts may be illegal.
